Checking Your Vehicle's Battery with a Voltmeter

You could use several basic instruments to measure the capabilities of your vehicle's battery. Readily available for purchase at hardware stores and auto specialty shops, a voltmeter provides accurate analysis of a wide range of electrical components, including batteries.

A voltmeter is supposed to be properly connected to the positive and negative terminals of a vehicle's battery. Once you make the appropriate connections and adjust the gauge settings, you'll see numerical readings that are displayed in volts. Compared to a standard performance chart, a low reading indicates that the battery is weak and likely to fail in the near future. Corrosion on the terminals might also indicate some major problems that need to be immediately addressed.
